The Pearson Institute of Higher Education (now Eduvos) experienced a high student demand shortly before the pandemic. It was to extend its Tshwane campus, add commercial space, and a student residence. The proposal above explores using the existing building’s architectural language as a design informant for the high-rise tower. This zoning typology is to capitalize on the latent potential of the rapidly developing Menlyn and Menlyn Maine precinct.

    01. This proposal explores a multi-functional vertical circulation core that caters to two towers, one residential (short) and one commercial (tall). This approach aims to respect its urban context and scale through stepped volumes. The two adjoined towers would allow for an architectural language that can distinguish each tower’s function whilst keeping a uniform aesthetic for the campus.

    02. This proposal employs a multi-functional vertical circulation core similar to the previous proposal. However, the two towers are inversely shifted to allow for better views and solar heat gain. The massing of the towers is inversely proportional like a two-piece puzzle. Where the one protrudes, the one contracts. This approach aims to utilize the gross floor area and the zoning parameters efficiently.

    03. This proposal employs two decentralized vertical circulation cores which allow a single floor plate to be occupied by two functions unimpaired. The massing of the tower was conceived as one solid volume with circular cutbacks that form shared spaces, green balconies, light wells for views and solar heat gain.
